Title: Barrier Solutions for Sustainable Food PackagingApplication Deadline: May 31, 2023Purpose: “In 2018, Kraft Heinz announced our goal to make 100% of our packaging globally recyclable, reusable or compostable by 2025. Unfortunately, sustainable packaging materials often lack the desired level of barrier required to meet the targeted shelf life for our food products. Conventional solutions for improving barrier can still have limited barrier performance with sustainable materials or be incompatible with the recycling or composting streams.  We are seeking barrier materials and/or coatings for packaging that deliver against high oxygen or moisture barrier requirements for dry or aqueous food products with varying pH levels and oil content.” Amount: $25,000-$100,000

Title: Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence ProgramApplication Deadline: June 1, 2023Purpose: “The Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence (S-I-R) Program is a unique Fulbright Scholar Program initiative that is specifically driven by the goals of U.S. institutions of higher education to enhance internationalization efforts on their campuses. Through the S-I-R Program, institutions host a scholar from outside of the United States for a semester or full academic year to teach courses, assist in curriculum development, guest lecture, develop study abroad/exchange partnerships and engage with the campus and the local community.” Amount: Grant benefits for the Fulbright S-I-R include: round-trip international air travel, a monthly stipend, an allowance for up to two dependents, and initial settling-in and professional allowances.

A common first step in establishing an NSF research center is to demonstrate success with an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) Site in the field of interest.  REU Sites are also helpful in recruiting graduate students. Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs

Wichita State University continues to host Beoshock, a High-performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. Office of Research EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT – Sarah Haug

Sarah is a life-long Kansan, growing up in Valley Center, Kansas and attending Wichita State University. She majored in Business Administration with emphases in Entrepreneurship, Management and Marketing.  Sarah joined the Office of Research in 2009 and has gone along for the ride ever since! During her tenure with the university, she has worn many hats. While currently holding a Senior Grant and Contract Specialist position within the office, she previously served as the IRB Administrator as well as a part-time Funding Opportunity Specialist.  Sarah has found joy in being part of the ever-growing research initiatives on campus and is proud to serve the WSU community.  She resides in Colwich and is married to her high-school sweetheart, Derek. REMINDER: WSU Indirect Cost Recovery Rate Agreement Signed

Negotiations with the federal government on WSU’s new F&A (Facilities and Administration) rates, effective 1 July 2022, are now complete and the new agreement was signed on March 1, 2023. Please note the following significant changes to the Academic Affairs rates: On Campus Organized Research rate decreasing from the current 48% to a new rate of 40%, the On Campus Other Sponsored Activities rate decreasing from the current 30% to a new rate of 19%, the Off Campus Organized Research rate remaining the same at 26%, and the Off Campus Other Sponsored Activities rate decreasing from the current 26% to a new rate of 17%. The new rates will impact your proposal and award budgets, as well as the distribution and availability of F&A funds used to support research activities on campus.  Read the new F&A Rate Agreement here.  

 

REMINDER - National Science Foundation Makes Changes to Major Research Instrumentation Program (MRI)

NSF has made several changes to its Major Research Instrumentation Program.  Applications for FY24 will now be due between October 15 and November 15, 2023.  Thus, WSU is updating its internal competition dates for next year, and Notices of Intent to apply, as well as answers to the required limited submission questions (found here), for the FY24 MRI program will be due to proposals@wichita.edu by May 1, 2023 at 12noon.  Cost sharing is waived for the next five years, and the maximum allowed under Track 1 has increased to $1,400,000.  Finally, the new Track 3 is specifically for proposal requests that “include the acquisition, development, installation, operation and maintenance of equipment and instrumentation to reduce consumption of helium.” NSF Major Research Instrumentation Program Page
