Purpose: “…provide seed money for junior faculty members that often result in additional funding from other sources. This is a one-year grant (June 1 to May 31). Eligibility for the Powe Awards is open to full-time assistant professors at ORAU member institutions within two years of their tenure track appointment at the time of application.” Research projects must fall within one of these five disciplines: Engineering and Applied Science; Life Sciences; Mathematics/Computer Sciences; Physical Sciences; or Policy, Management, or Education.
Amount: The award amount provided by ORAU is $5,000. WSU is required to match the award with at least an additional $5,000.

Purpose: “DISES supports research projects that advance basic scientific understanding of integrated socio-environmental systems and the complex interactions (dynamics, processes, and feedbacks) within and among the environmental (biological, physical and chemical) and human ("socio") (economic, social, political, or behavioral) components of such a system. The program seeks proposals that emphasize the truly integrated nature of a socio-environmental system versus two discrete systems (a natural one and a human one) that are coupled. DISES projects must explore a connected and integrated socio-environmental system that includes explicit analysis of the processes and dynamics between the environmental and human components of the system.”

Title: Community-Engaged Health Equity Research in Neuroscience Initiative (R34-CT Not Allowed)

Purpose: “…planning grants to assess feasibility and/or determine best practices to conduct community-engaged health equity research in neurological disorders with populations that experience health disparities (HDPs). If successful, these planning grants would support, enable and/or lay the groundwork for future clinical studies or trials. In addition to posing a research question related to addressing health disparities in neurological disorders, applicants must also be filling a gap in 1) Engagement with one or more HDP communities; and/or 2) Multidisciplinary research team expertise in neurological disorders, health disparities research and/or community-engaged research. Expected outcomes would advance understanding of drivers of health disparities and barriers to neurological health equity and establish collaborative research teams,including community partners, with appropriate expertise in community engagement with HDPs, health disparities research and neurological disorders.”

Learn to Use BeoShock for your Advanced Research Computing Needs
Wichita State University continues to host Beoshock, a High-Performance Computing Cluster (HPC). This HPC is available and free to faculty members, researchers and students engaged in course work or research activities. BeoShock runs the CentOS Linux operating system and features approximately 720 processor cores, two high memory compute nodes with 1.5 terabytes of memory, and four graphics processing unit (GPU) accelerators. BeoShock also has a variety of software tools that may be helpful in your research endeavors, such as Matlab, Mathematica, R, Python and many more.

Brayden is a sophomore at WSU majoring in Finance with a minor in Business Analytics and is back for another semester as a Student Assistant for Post-Award in the Office of Research. Brayden hails from Warsaw, Missouri which is next to the Ozarks. Outside of classes and working in the office, he enjoys movies, spending time with friends, and watching and playing sports. After visiting the Office of Research team at the WSU Job Fair, Brayden knew he wanted to work with the friendly people on the Post-Award team.
