Matilyn “Mati” Newman graduated from Wichita State University in May 2025, earning her bachelor's in integrated marketing communications from the Elliot School of Communication. As a recent graduate, Newman hit the ground running with her role as the digital marketing assistant at the Rotary Club of Wichita. In her role, Newman has witnessed how her classwork intertwines with her professional work.
“Courses such as Campaigns 626, Ad Copywriting 525 and Communications Strategy 450 have had the most impact on my professional work,” Newman said. "These classes stuck with me, and I find myself referencing to them frequently."
In her marketing role, she assists in developing and scheduling social media content and managing brand consistency across the organization’s website, social platforms and weekly meetings. Newman is developing a six-month-to-yearlong campaign of weekly social media posts that highlight the Rotary Club of Wichita’s history and fun facts. She’s no longer mimicking the work she has done in her communication classes.
“I also found that Visual Technologies 205 improved my graphic design skills, which I utilize almost every day at the Rotary Club of Wichita,” Newman said.
Her academic journey has served her more than well in developing the hard skills she needs as the liaison between the community and the Rotary Club of Wichita, but also from digital interactions into real-world connections. True to the Rotary Club of Wichita’s motto, “Service Above Self”, Newman brings her best work forward, especially in communications. Communication is vital in her role, one of the many soft skills and benefits that came from her education.
“During my time at WSU, many of my courses prepared me to network and effectively communicate my skills, helping me further my academic and professional career,” Newman said.
As a student, Newman took active measures to secure the best of her education and personal development, being recognized by the Elliot School of Communication as an outstanding senior. She was noted for her great attitude, seeking feedback and never doing the bare minimum.
Reflecting on her journey, Newman sees how the intersections of these experiences have led her to where she is now. As a former Shocker, now alumna, her insight on herself now expands to others in the Shocker Nation.
"For current Shocker students, my best advice is to take advantage of the Shocker Career Accelerator early on in their academic journey. Even if you aren't sure what you want to do exactly, they will help you find a place to start! Also, try and seek part-time work during the academic year to build experience and begin making professional connections. Lastly, make sure to enjoy your time, it goes by quick!” Newman said.
Wichita State's applied learning program gives students hands-on, paid experience with industry partners, helping them build careers before graduation.
