The Joan Hargrove Political Science Scholarship

This scholarship is a memorial by Dean Hargrove for his mother, Joan, who was secretary to Dr. Hugo Wall, professor and namesake of the Hugo Wall School. The award is made to in an incoming Freshman in the amount of $8,000 for up to four years as long as eligiblity is maintained.

Dean Hargrove is a television producer, writer, and director. Hargrove is most known for his work at Viacom Productions, where he collaborated with Fred Silverman to produce many popular shows including Matlock, Jake and the Fatman, the Father Dowling Mysteries series, and Diagnosis: Murder. Prior to partnering with Silverman, Hargrove was a writer and/or producer for the original The Man from U.N.C.L.E. series, Columbo, McCloud, Dear Detective, and the Perry Mason made-for-TV movies, among others. Hargrove's most recent project was the 2015 documentary Tap World, a feature-length film that follows the international leaders of the art form and their efforts to keep it alive and thriving.

Early in his career, Hargrove received an Emmy nomination for his contributions to a short-lived NBC series with Bob Newhart, the Bob Newhart Show (not to be confused with the long-running CBS series of the same name). Hargrove has received five total Emmy nominations in his lifetime and won a Primetime Emmy Award for Columbo in 1974.

Born in Iola, Kansas, Hargrove is a graduate of the St. John's Military School of Salina. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science at Wichita State University, where his favorite professor was Dr. Steve Worth. Hargrove also studied film at UCLA. Hargrove was awarded the WSU President's Medal in 1996 and is a former board member of the Writer's Guild Foundation and a Newcomen honoree. He is married to former actress Brenda Scott.

Eligibility

Applicants must:
• Be a declared Political Science major
• Be enrolled full time at Wichita State University
• Maintain a 3.0 overall GPA throughout the course of their studies

The scholarship award will be made with regard to financial need. Applicants are encouraged to complete a FAFSA form https://fafsa.ed.gov/
