ShiftSpace: a student-run, roaming gallery

Be part of the contemporary art scene.

Established in 2005, ShiftSpace Gallery earned its name from its early days as a "roaming" gallery. ShiftSpace is still on the move, so be sure to check our Facebook and/or Instagram accounts for more details on openings, events, and exhibitions.

The ShiftSpace Student Group programs the gallery, prepares exhibitions, and engages in community outreach. With the assistance of Gallery Manager Jefferson Godard, students take on every gallery role, including curator, preparator, community outreach coordinator, social media manager, and more. The group is open to any currently enrolled Wichita State University students.

ShiftSpace is proud to present: "Artist/Architect/Activist: Gordon Parks & Charles McAfee."

Charles F. McAfee (b. 1932, Los Angeles, CA), FAIA, NOMA, is a Wichita-based award winning architect and activist.

Considered one of the most important African American architects in the United States, he used architecture to create new opportunities for African Americans and advocate for socio-economic parity.

McAfee was the founding principal and  president of Charles F. McAfee Architects, Engineers, and Planners, formerly in  Wichita. The firm completed many projects including The McKnight Art Center  (completed in 1970), and The Ulrich Museum (completed in 1974) at Wichita State University.

Other notable achievements include the McAdams Park (completed in 1969), the first pool in Wichita that allowed African Americans an opportunity to train in an Olympic regulation pool during segregation, and Olympic buildings for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia.

His firm, now McAfee3 Architects, is run by his daughters Cheryl Lynn McAfee, and Charyl Frena McAfee-Duncan with locations in Dallas, Atlanta, and Wichita.  Recent projects include the DFW Dallas and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airports, Morehouse College also in Atlanta, Georgia.

This exhibition is in tandem with Gordon Parks Academy and The Ulrich Museum.

We had a lovely turnout for our collaborative one-night performance between ShiftSpace and Fisch Haus. In this exhibition, the viewer (you) was the artist. During the event, people brought images and had the opportunity to create an artwork that celebrated your loved one! Refreshments were served and a fun time was had by all!

The Fisch Haus Gallery is located on the ground floor at 524 S Congress, Wichita, KS, 67202
