Community Engagement in Service

Engaged service is associated with the use of university expertise to address specific issues (ad hoc or long-term) identified by individuals, organizations, or communities. This type of engagement is not primarily driven by a research question, though a research question may be of secondary interest in the activity.

Civic Engagement: A teaching and learning focus on educating students as global citizens. Classes or programs include meaningful civic education and activities for social good. Classes and projects have components of reflection and engagement.

Co-Curricular Service-Learning :a service opportunity for on-campus clubs/organizations to participate in meaningful service based on that group’s mission and skills. Co-curricular Service-learning provides personal development and unity to the group while fulfilling a community need.

Community development (National Association of Community Development Extension Professionals, 2021): Community development is a practice-based profession and an academic discipline that promotes participative democracy, sustainable development, rights, equality, economic opportunity and social justice, through the organization, education and empowerment of people within their communities, whether these be of locality, identity or interest, in urban and rural settings.

Community Service: Volunteerism and community service performed by students for community benefit. This service can be but is not necessarily integrated with a particular program of study. This may include structured projects (days of service), smaller group projects, fund-raising events, or individual volunteerism, which is acknowledged by the campus.

Contracted servicesServices provided by faculty and staff, through agreement with another agency, organization, or individual on behalf of the organization. The agreement specifies the services or personnel to be provided on behalf of the organization and the fees to provide these services or personnel.

Economic Development (Klein & Woodell, 2015): Proactive institutional engagement, with partners and stakeholders, in sustainable growth of the competitive capacities that contribute to the advancement of society through the realization of individual, firm, community, and regional-to-global economic and social potential. 

International and Domestic Travel/Exchange: An instructional program delivered in either an overseas location or domestic location. Often the program is delivered as a semester-long or intercession sequence of courses, the content of which is enhanced by the location of instruction, by distinctive historic or cultural features available in the location, or by a unique approach to the subject matter that is specific to the locale. Exchanges are often conducted by individual students traveling independently to a location that has been pre-approved by their home institution, and where they determine their specific course of study in collaboration with home and host institution faculty.

Outreach: An effort by individuals in an organization or group to connect its ideas or practices to the efforts of other organizations, groups, specific audiences, or the general public.

Place-Conscious Engagement/Development: a comprehensive approach to community development and aim to revitalize multiple aspects of an entire neighborhood (or even region) to create lasting change for its residents.

Training/Consulting/Facilitating: Projects that involve buying the skills and expertise (pre-existing know how) of university staff and equipment to work on a specified project and the sponsor may seek to own any intellectual property and may also expect complete confidentiality on the part of the university, thus negating any publication opportunities

Volunteering: as a voluntary act of by an individual or group freely giving time and labor for community service.
