Department of Public Health Sciences

Chris Megonigle is a senior majoring in health science and minoring in public health and health care management. 

After struggling to find success in college in his first attempt, Chris gave it another go in his adulthood and found faculty in the Department of Public Health Sciences who supported him and were actively engaged in making sure he was able to keep up with his schoolwork and personal life without burning out.

Chris says the faculty members he is most thankful for are Sarah Taylor, director of undergraduate programs and associate educator; Dr. Stephen Arnold, professor; and Dr. Suzanne Hawley, professor.

Sarah Taylor is the director of undergraduate programs and associate educator for the Department of Public Health Sciences. She is also the Retention Faculty Fellow for the College of Health Professions. Each month the WSU Retention Fellows host Teaching Matters events, which provides an opportunity for faculty, instructors, and students to work together to enhance and improve teaching and learning.

Sarah says, "As faculty, we have more ‘face-to-face’ time with students than most anyone else on campus. It’s important that we use our role to help and encourage students. I believe a really easy way faculty can do this is by showing students they care about them."

Tatumn Graham, Health Management major, recently secured a job as a Chiropractic Assistant at Optimal Wellness with Dr. Nathan Hands, thanks to the Shocker Career Accelerator and Career Ready Appointments.

Tatumn describes the appointment: "The Resume Review appointment taught me what employers want and how a resume should look. I updated my LinkedIn and Handshake and immediately saw the impact of a great resume."

Tatumn recommends Career Ready Appointments: "Without hesitation! I believe in asking for help, even when you think you don't need it. These resources made my journey possible."

Dr. Hawley was named the 2023 Phenomenal Woman by the WSU Office of Diversity and Inclusion. Dr. Hawley’s contributions to the department, university, and community create positive social change and increased equity for all. She is an exemplary Shocker, extraordinary institutional citizen, and a member of our learning community who exhibits remarkable commitment to Wichita State.

Dr. Hawley also received the President's Distinguished Service Award which recognizes the dedication and excellence of an individual who has provided exemplary, dedication and caring service to the WSU community that is beyond the expectations of the duties and responsibilities of their position. 

 

Dr. Amy Drassen Ham was awarded the 2023 Leadership in the Advancement of Teaching award. Established in 1982, the Leaderships in the Advancement of Teaching award is given each year to an individual whose activities have had a major impact on improving teaching and the status and importance of good teaching at Wichita State University.

Dr. Amy Chesser was promoted to full professor for her outstanding contributions to her discipline, the college, and the university. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition of your excellence in teaching, research, and service.
