Engineering: Remote Instructions

 

There are three steps to follow each time you would like to connect to a WSU Engineering computer from your off-campus computer.

  • Step 1: Connect to WSU's VPN
  • Step 2: Access your computer's Remote Desktop Application
  • Step 3: Connect to a WSU Computer

See below for individual instructions based on your off-campus computer's operating system.

Select the operating system for your off-campus computer:

Windows PC

Step 1: Connect to VPN (Windows)

If you have never used WSU'S VPN, here is how you can download and connect:

Important: You will need to activate this connection this each time you want to connect to the WSU Engineering computer.

Step 2: Access Remote Desktop Application (Windows)

1. Press the Start button in the lower left and type "Remote Desktop Connection."

2. If you see the Remote Desktop program, select it.

Do you not see this program on your computer? You can download it from the Windows store:

3. Press the Windows key and search for Shop. Select the Microsoft Store from the list

4. In the Microsoft Store, search for Microsoft Remote Desktop. Press Install.

Step 3: Connect to WSU Computer: (Windows)

Did you already have Remote Desktop Connection prior to Step 2, or did you download it from the Microsoft Store?

These instructions are for you if you already had the Remote Desktop Connection application on your machine and did not need to download it from the Windows Store.

1. In the Remote Desktop program, press Show Options in the lower left.

 2. Enter the following information:

  • Computer Name type the name of your campus computer, adding ".ad.wichita.edu" to the end of the name; for example, ee-328-01.ad.wichita.edu
    • If you don't know the computer name, contact your professor.
  • User Name: ad\your WSUID; for example: ad\i111i222
  • Press Connect.
  • When prompted for password, enter your WSUID password.

 Important: if you receieve a warning message that another user is signed in , press No and connect to a different computer name. This message means that another student is using that lab computer. Try a different computer name (e.g. ee-328-05, then ee-328-06, and so on), until you find an available machine.

Notes:

  • Once you are connected you’ll see the lab desktop and you will have access to all the engineering programs installed on that lab computer
  • If you receive a message asking if you want to allow another person to connect to this machine, press Cancel, otherwise you’ll lose your connection to the computer

Cancel

  • When you are finished, please log off from the computer and disconnect from your VPN connection (instructions available under VPN Setup Instructions)
  • Please do not save any files to the WSU remote computer: be sure you are saving to your desktop or cloud drive. Save often to avoid losing work.

Microsoft Remote Desktop

These instructions are for you if you downloaded the Microsoft Remote Desktop App from the Windows store in Step 2.

1. Press Add to add a desktop.

2. Enter the following information:

  • PC Name: type the name of your campus computer, adding ".ad.wichita.edu" to the end of the name; for example, ee-328-01.ad.wichita.edu,
    • If you don't know the computer name, contact your professor.
  • Press Connect.
  • Press Save.

3. Double click on icon under Saved Desktop to start the remote connection. To change the name of the computer, click on the … then press edit.

4. When you are prompted for credentials:

  • Username: Enter ad\myWSU ID (for example ad\i111i222),
  • Password: your myWSUID password
  • Press Connect.

  • Once you are connected you’ll see the lab desktop and you will have access to all the engineering programs installed on that lab computer
  • If you receive a message asking if you want to allow another person to connect to this machine, press Cancel, otherwise you’ll lose your connection to the computer

Apple/Mac

 

Step 1: Connect to VPN (Apple)

Step 2: Access Remote Desktop Application (Apple)

If you have never remoted into a Windows computer from your Mac, you will need to download the Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 application.

1. Open the App Store.

Step 3: Connect to WSU Computer (Apple)

 

If this is your first time opening Microsoft Remote Desktop, you will need to add your WSU computer.

 

1. Select Add PC.

2. Enter the following information:

  • PC Name: enter the name of your campus computer, adding ".ad.wichita.edu" to the end of the name; for example, ee-328-01.ad.wichita.edu.
    • If you don't know the computer name, contact your professor.
  • Press Add.

3. In the popup screen, enter the following:

  1. Username: ad\(wsuid)
    • For example: ad\i111i222
  2. Password: Your myWSUID password
  3. Press Add.

4. A new desktop will appear in the App. Double click on it to start the session.

5. Click Continue if you receive a popup.

Notes:

  • Once you are connected you’ll see the lab desktop and you will have access to all the engineering programs installed on that lab computer
  • If you receive a message asking if you want to allow another person to connect to this machine, press Cancel, otherwise you’ll lose your connection to the computer.

  • When you are finished, please log off from the computer by pressingthe red button on the left side of the window. Don’t forget to also end the VPN session (see VPN section)
