Computer-Based Proctoring Procedures and Options at Wichita State (Starting Fall 2023)

Non-Proctored Alternatives to Exam Integrity

Before requiring an exam to be proctored, faculty should consider whether non-proctored alternatives will work in their courses. OIR has a page of online test integrity recommendations if you would like to learn more.

For all courses, whether in-person, hybrid, or online, WSU has approved Examity for virtual human-proctored exams, and Honorlock for Ai-proctored exams.

Respondus and ProctorU are no longer permitted for use at WSU as of July 31, 2023.

WSU’s Approved Options:

  1. Honorlock:  Automated (Recorded and AI flagged) proctoring, which must be reviewed by faculty –
    1. paid directly by WSU. (no cost to students)
    2. proctoring sessions are recorded by Honorlock and monitored by the Honorlock AI, which looks for suspicious activity and flags it for faculty review.
  2. Examity: Live proctoring
    1. paid directly by students (outside of student fees). This amount is currently between $11-17 depending on features chosen and length of exam.
    2. Courses are limited to four (4) live proctored exams per term to minimize non-student fees expenses for students.
    3. It is recommended that faculty only deploy two (2) proctored exams per term because of these added costs to students.

Proctoring Requirements for Faculty

Because of privacy and security risks associated with virtual proctoring, faculty requiring this service in their courses are required to provide:

  • Notification in the syllabus and course schedule of estimated fees paid directly by the student (for Examity-based live proctoring)
  • Notification of students to avoid testing in personal spaces such as bedrooms or other sensitive locations
  • To students a detailed inventory of information collected by the online proctoring solution
    • These include name, email, digital signature, challenge questions, ID image, room environment, as well as full access to webcam video, audio, computer desktop environment, and credit card details for live exams)
  • Clear instructions on how students remove online proctoring browser plugins once the exam is completed.
  • Reasonable alternatives to online proctoring (see below).

Proctoring Alternatives

  1. In-person group proctored exams administered by WSU with no fee.
  2. WSU Testing – limited in-person proctoring with minimal fee.
  3. Approved in-person proctor – With pre-approval, faculty can give permission for an individual or an authorized testing center to proctor exams in-person. Test fees and available times will vary by location if using an authorized testing center. Examples could include other faculty or teachers, librarians, clergy, armed services service center staff, etc.
  4. Faculty-led remote 1:1 proctoring – Using web conferencing services, WSU faculty may choose to proctor individual students 1:1 with no fee. Students should be allowed to protect the privacy of their location if using this option.
