Sponsel sharpens her skills at KMUW

Sponsel

Suzette Sponsel, communication (emphasis in journalism) major and sociology minor, discovered the news business felt like home while interning at KMUW, 89.1 Wichita Public Radio.

Throughout her internship, Sponsel performed a variety of job duties such as, writing digital content, interviewing via phone or in person, photography, shadowing reporters and writing on-air content.

“Each day is something new,” she said. “I have developed and enhanced my interviewing and writing skills because of the guidance from the News Director, Tom Shine. He edits my writing while also providing encouragement, which made me more confident in my writing as well.”

By working in a professional environment, Sponsel said she has learned to work well in a team and support each other, especially in a news industry like KMUW with a high reputation.

“Since KMUW represents good-quality character I am also held to a high standard, which makes me always do my best in my interviews and writing,” she said. “Build relationships and never burn bridges and you will succeed.”

Sponsel hopes to be a Communication Director for a business and create her own business news someday.

“Don’t be afraid to try something,” Sponsel stated. “You are good enough – believe it and work hard and it will pay off.”
