What is the APPE Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl?

  • Teams of undergraduates from across the nation compete in regional and national matches where they analyze cases with multiple ethical dimensions and present their ethical analysis for a panel of judges.
  • Cases are drawn from real-life examples that span many areas of ethics, including (but not limited to) bioethics, education, engineering, environmental, social and political, technology and research.
  • Teams in the competition are judged on clarity and insight rather than beating your opponent.

Why participate?

  • It’s fun! Students not only get to work with one another to craft detailed assessments of real cases, but they also get to meet students from other universities, too.
  • It’s free! No payment required.
  • It improves your critical thinking and communication skills.
  • A unique experience to discuss in job/school application letters.

What are the expectations?

  • Meetings will be held twice a week for the 8-9 weeks before the competition in the Fall semester. Each meeting will last roughly an hour.
  • For the competition, teams should be comprised of 3-5 students. Registering multiple teams is possible if enough people want to participate.
  • If you're not interested in competing, you're still welcome to attend meetings to discuss the cases.

Rocky Mountain Regional competition: Saturday, November 7, 2026

* If the team advances, National Competition: March 2027

The results are in for 2025!

(Spoiler: The WSU team did great!)
