Shockers,

Thank you for voicing your concern and passion around decisions made for the Fall 2020 semester. We value your feedback, and this is an issue the administration and departments across the university have discussed at length and feel that the benefits of the current grading system are the most beneficial to the student body as a whole.

Our regular grading system, which was in place for summer semester and now for our current fall semester, is most reflective of the achievements of students over the semester.

Data shows students benefit from a grading system that provides transparent documentation of their hard work over the semester through a number of graded assignments and tests that provide feedback on their progress.

For students who have personal situations that have led to academic challenges, we have processes in place for late withdrawal and grade appeals. We highly encourage all students to consult with their academic advisors to see if they should explore these options. Advisors can also provide resources and strategies for finishing the semester successfully.

Please know that we hear you, and anyone who is struggling, we have processes set in place to support you and your education.

Sincerely,

Shirley Lefever, interim executive vice president and provost
