WSU is working diligently to fix student veterans' benefits backlog

A paperwork backlog at Wichita State and the national level caused some student veterans at WSU to not receive their GI Bill benefits.

WSU is working hard to remedy the local situation, which was a result of understaffing within WSU's Military and Veteran Services department.

Larry Burks, the new director of the department, says a group of eight staff members have been working diligently to examine every single case file and clear the backlog.

"All of us who support campus veterans are sincerely sorry this has happened," he said in a letter to the Sunflower student newspaper.

Here's where things stand as of Tuesday, Nov. 13, based on all applications received:

  • 64 certifications have been completed (this includes first-time certifications, adjustments and amendments.)
  • 36 need follow-ups from VA or students. (All documentation has been reviewed and additional answers are needed from students to process the paperwork. Emails have been sent to those students).
  • 55 completed applications were transmitted to VA for certification last weekend.

Any student veterans who are experiencing financial hardship because of these errors have been informed how to fill out a loan application.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of student veterans and their family members are experiencing a similar problem because of a technical glitch within the Department of Veteran Affairs.
