The music of Johannes Brahms and Zoltan Kodaly will be performed by the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra, along with faculty artist Julie Bees, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, in Miller Concert Hall, Duerksen Fine Arts Center.

General admission is $7 (discounts available), and free at the box office for students with a WSU ID.

Directed by associate professor Mark Laycock, the concert will feature excerpts from Kodaly’s 1926 comic opera, “Hary Janos Suite,” which incorporates folksongs and popular dance tunes.

Also featured will be Bees’ performance of Brahms’ Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major, which exhibits the rhythmic invention, lyricism and structural balance iconic to the composer.

Bees, professor of piano and director of Wichita State’s Konrad Wolff-Ilse Bing Chamber Music Endowment Award, will perform as a soloist for this concert. She has played recital debuts in New York City at Merkin Hall, in Chicago on the Dame Myra Hess series and in Washington, D.C., at the Phillips Collection. She performed the Ravel Concerto in G Major with the WSU Symphony Orchestra on their recent tour of Spain, and has performed recital tours of Europe and Asia.

Laycock’s work as guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator spans 24 states, including the leadership of multiple all-state and regional orchestras. His upcoming engagements include venues in Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Nevada, Oklahoma and Texas.
