Beware of phony e-mail requests

Wichita State University's computing department warns that a new set of fraudulent "phishing" e-mails are targeting WSU students, faculty and staff.

The phishing scam generally involves people posing as university staff or administrators who request that private identification or account information be sent in a reply to the e-mail.

Usually the e-mail threatens dire consequences if the information is not sent.

Remember: Wichita State University representatives will never ask you to provide ID or password information through e-mail.

Do not reply to any e-mail requesting your ID number, password or other personal information -- even if you do not reveal such information in the reply. Compromised accounts can be used in criminal activities and may open the system up to attack.

If you have sent password information in a reply to such e-mails, please immediately change your password using the password management tool on the myWSU portal Web site.

If you have any questions, please contact Jason Holmes at 987-3503 or the University Computing help desk at 978-4357.
