WSU graduate art students show works on paper

Three graduate students of Wichita State's fine arts graduate program will show recent work at the Walnut Street Gallery on Final Friday, May 30. The show, titled "Pulp Non-Fiction," will exclusively feature works on paper, with the abstract grid forms of printmaker Ryan Harjo, intaglio etchings of Dane Jones, and large-scale drawings by Amber Vanhatala Stene.

The students, all in the final thesis stage of their studies, addressed a shared theme, "a sense of misplacement within society."

In the "Pulp Non-Fiction" show, Harjo's work combines complex processes of printmaking and the formality of the grid to talk about the structure of landscape as it pertains to our daily rituals. Jones' detailed conceptual series describes his feelings about his artistic abilities, as though they are a hindrance. Stene's large-scale drawings use implausible combinations to provoke an examination of the process of fitting into society.

The Walnut Street Gallery, open 7 p.m.-10 p.m. Friday, May 30, is located at 112 S. Walnut St., off West Douglas. Douglas will be closed for the car show, but the gallery can easily be reached by going west on Douglas across the bridge, south on McLean, west on Maple, and north on Walnut St. The location is also on the week's Final Friday's trolley schedule.
