WSU to promote science careers for girls

Wichita State University will host up to 100 middle school girls for the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, in the CAC Theater.

This is the first EYH in Wichita, Kans., a career conference emphasizing science, technology, engineering and math for young women. The EYH Network is a national program that gives girls a chance to engage in hands-on activities and meet role models in science disciplines. The purpose of the event is to motivate future professionals to become innovative and creative thinkers prepared to meet 21st century challenges. College officials plan to hold the event annually.

Registration is limited to 100 participants to maximize interaction at workshops, and will be processed on a first-come, first served basis through Tuesday, Oct. 15. The registration fee of $12 includes lunch, a name badge, T-shirt and bag for the student attending. Prizes will be awarded at the event, including a scholarship for the WSU Engineering Summer Camp and for the City of Maize summer CSI camp.

Students will be able to register for three workshops, including “Polymers, Polymers Everywhere!,” Robot Basketball,” “Clean Air is Always in Fashion,” “Ewww! There are Some Funny Bugs in the Stream,” “Take Flight with EYH,” “DNA in a Bottle,” “More Than Meets the Eye,” “Are You a Wild One?,” “Future Vet,” “Pet Rescue 911,” “Infectious Outbreak,” “The Slime is ALIVE!” and “Fancy Feathered Fliers.”

Parents will also have the opportunity to attend a session to cover topics such as financing college, college expectations related to preparation during middle and high school, and the process of applying to colleges (including ACT taking, test prep, college visits, application essays, scholarships, etc.). Aaron Hamilton, associate director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, will be on hand to answer questions.
