Playwright in residence hosted by WSU School of Performing Arts

The School of Performing Arts Theatre is hosting playwright Eric Coble in residence at Wichita State University during the run of its production of “The Dead Guy,” a satirical look at reality television, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Feb 19-21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Wilner Auditorium on the WSU main campus.

During Coble’s visit to WSU, the School of Performing Arts will host two special events:

A “Meet the Playwright” reception will be held immediately following the opening-night performance of “The Dead Guy” on Thursday, Feb. 19. Coble will also lead a writing workshop from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21.

Both events are free and open to the public, but reservations must be made to attend the workshop. Call 316-978-3360 for information. Both events will take place in the Wilner Auditorium on the WSU main campus.

Coble’s body of work includes a production on Broadway, “The Velocity of Autumn,” which premiered at the Booth Theatre in 2014, starring Estelle Parsons and Stephen Spinella and directed by Molly Smith. Coble has also written “Bright Ideas,” “My Barking Dog,” “A Girl’s Guide to Coffee,” “The Baker Street Irregulars” and “The Giver,” which have been staged off-Broadway in all 50 states and internationally.

Coble’s works have been produced in numerous prestigious venues, including at Manhattan Class Company, The Kennedy Center, Playwrights Horizons, Actors Theatre of Louisville Humana Festival, Denver Center Theatre Company, Arena Stage, New York and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, Alliance Theatre, Cleveland Play House, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, South Coast Repertory, Asolo Repertory, Indiana Repertory, Coterie Theatre, Great Lakes Theater Festival, Stages Repertory, Geva Theatre and The Contemporary American Theatre Festival.

His accolades include the AATE Distinguished Play Award for Best Adaptation, an Emmy nomination, the Chorpenning Playwriting Award for Body of Work, the AT&T Onstage Award, National Theatre Conference Playwriting Award, an NEA Playwright in Residence Grant, a TCG Extended Collaboration Grant, the Cleveland Arts Prize, two Cuyahoga Arts and Culture Fellowships and four Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Grants.
