Wichita State fraternity receives national recognition

Wichita State's Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity has received its national organization’s most sought-after award: The Buchanan Cup. This award of highest distinction, announced at the national convention, is given to only 30 of the 230-plus chapters in the nation every two years. The Kansas Eta chapter won three consecutive Buchanan Cups from 2001-2005.

Only chapters that represent themselves with consistent consummation and adherence to the principles that form the foundation of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity can attain such an accolade. Such chapters must have members who exemplify virtue, are steadfastly diligent and imbued with brotherly compassion.

Recipients of the award must also have members who are dutiful civil servants. This includes participation in philanthropic work such as Pennies for Wishes, in which the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter raised $7,700. The Kansas Eta chapter is also involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters and sexual assault prevention and awareness efforts. These efforts include coordinating with the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center for events such as Take Back the Night and Walk-A-Mile.

Sigma Phi Epsilon prides itself in the building of balanced men who don’t shy away from their duties. These include numerous service events and projects such as Neighborhood Clean-Up, Wishes for Miracles 5k and Zach’s Wishes for Miracles, which raised more than $3,000 in 2013 alone.

“I’m excited to start a new legacy of consecutive Buchanan Cup wins,” says Jaren Johnson, the president of the Wichita State chapter.
