Twenty-fifth annual Shocktoberfest celebrates lasting memories at Wichita State University

The Student Activities Council (SAC) at Wichita State University will celebrate 25 years of Shocktoberfest Oct.17-24. Shocktoberfest is a long-running tradition at Wichita State, celebrating Shocker spirit and pride since 1991.

This weeklong Vegas-themed series is a nod to creating lifelong memories as a member of the Shocker community. Annual events, programs and competitions are intended for Shockers of all ages.

Shocker fan’s favorite mascot will make an appearance as Elvis at the Wu Could Marry You event on Tuesday, Oct. 20, in the RSC. A casino night on Friday, Oct. 23, will bring some additional Vegas jazz to campus.

Other key events include the WSU Pumpkin Run 5K, Shocker Family Fall Festival, Banner Competition and Breakfast with Bardo. The ever popular Songfest, held at the Wichita Orpheum Theatre, will conclude the week’s festivities with a lip-synced dance off between different student organizations.

The group of students with the most points acquired through the week will receive the highly sought after Shocktoberfest trophy, which stands over five feet tall. Points can be acquired by attending different events, including Songfest.

Shocktoberfest is a great way for students to remain involved with campus during the mid-semester slump. Kristen Yacenda, the songfest coordinator for SAC, is looking forward to this year’s performances.

“Let’s just say that everyone is in for a memorable experience this year,” Yacenda said. “Word is that the groups have some outstanding performances in the making.”

Student Activities Council, one of the largest student-run organizations on campus, strives to enhance the Shocker experience through the variety of events it hosts throughout the year.
