WSU Symphony dresses up for Halloween family concert

Thrills and Chills is the theme for the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra Family Concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, in Miller Concert Hall. The program, featuring colorful and descriptive music, will be led by Mark Laycock and an array of advanced conducting students.

Dressed in Halloween costumes, the orchestra will present eight short selections designed to appeal to listeners of all ages. The concert will run for less than an hour and will not include an intermission.

Selections will include familiar themes from two Hollywood blockbusters: Elmer Bernstein’s “The Magnificent Seven” and John Williams’ “Jurassic Park.”

Excerpts from three Romantic masterworks will also be featured, including March to the Scaffold, two selections from the play “Peer Gynt,” and Camille Saint-Saëns’ rollicking Bacchanale.

The program will include Anatoly Lyadov’s “Baba-Yaga,” the moving Intermezzo from Ruggero Leoncavallo’s verismo opera “Pagliacci,” and Aaron Copland’s “John Henry,” a faithful retelling of the tale of man versus machine in the American South.

Tickets for the event can be purchased at the Fine Arts Box Office in the lobby of the Duerksen Fine Arts Center or online atwichita.edu/fineartsboxoffice. General admission is $7, with $6 discount tickets available for seniors, faculty/staff and military, and $3 tickets for children and students.
