Student innovators make it to final round of competition

  • Student entrepreneurs have created business concepts for the Shocker New Venture Competition.
  • Competitors have been whittled down to six qualifying teams.
  • Winners will be awarded money to help commercialize their business.

Six teams emerged as victors from Wichita State’s Shocker New Venture Competition Trade Show, held Friday, April 22.

The teams pitched their new venture ideas to approximately 200 judges, who were given 10,000 Shocker Dollars to invest in teams they think have the best chance of succeeding in the marketplace.

Those receiving the greatest amount of investment dollars will proceed to the finals round of the competition, presented by WSU’s Center for Entrepreneurship.

The public is invited to attend the finals from 1-4 p.m. Friday, April 29, in Devlin Hall on Wichita State’s main campus. A reception will be held following the presentations from 4-6 p.m., with the awards being presented at 5 p.m. Parking for the event is located on the northwest corner of 21 Street and Yale.

The six advancing teams:

  • ARMOR Personal Safety Alarm
  • Knox Equine Boot
  • Lawn Buddy
  • NanoFit
  • PayPer Park
  • Quickdraw Studios

The Shocker New Venture Competition is designed to inspire campus innovation and develop entrepreneurial mindsets.

Each year this event connects students from all academic disciplines to take key steps in developing world solutions.

During the Shocker New Venture Competition teams are challenged to present their ideas and projects through various entrepreneurial concepts.

Each team will be evaluated by their abilities to encapsulate their business concept through a clear value proposition, a market analysis and a sustainable competitive advantage.

At the end of the Shocker New Venture journey teams will be recognized for their hard work and dedication.

Winning teams will be awarded start-up capital from a prize pool of more than $30,000 to aid in the launch of their new venture.
