Wil Haygood, renowned author and producer, to speak at WSU

  • The Office of Special Programs will host a presentation by Wil Haygood on May 25.
  • Haygood is author of "The Butler – A Witness to History," which was made into a film in 2013.
  • A former Upward Bound student, Haygood will speak to TRIO and GEAR UP students prior to his presentation.

Wichita State University's Office of Special Programs will host renowned author Wil Haygood at a free presentation at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 25, at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex.

Haygood is most well known as the author of “The Butler – A Witness to History,” telling the story of Eugene Allen, the White House butler who served eight United States presidents.

Haygood was associate producer when the book was made into the 2013 movie “The Butler,” starring Forest Whittaker, Cuba Gooding Jr., Robin Williams and Oprah Winfrey.

In addition to writing novels, Haygood worked for 30 years as a reporter for The Boston Globe and The Washington Post, during which he covered Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and post-Hurricane Katrina New Orleans.

Haygood graduated from Miami University, where he was recently appointed the Karl and Helen Wiepking Visiting Distinguished Professor.

As a former Upward Bound student, Haygood will have a discussion with TRIO and GEAR UP students in the early afternoon.
