Residents of the Kansas City, Missouri, metropolitan area soon can attend Wichita State University for the same cost as Kansas residents.

Starting in fall 2017, the tuition assistance program - called Shocker City Partnership – will apply to residents of the following counties in Missouri: Bates, Caldwell, Cass, Clay, Clinton, Jackson, Lafayette, Platte and Ray.

The tuition rate applies to undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate students enrolling in 15 hours per semester would save more than $8,700 per year with this new rate. Graduate students enrolling in nine hours per semester save more than $3,700 per year.

“This tuition discount will be so beneficial for me heading into

my third year at WSU,” says Conner Clapham, a communication major who attended Oak Park High School in Kansas City, Missouri. “Being from Missouri, I'm glad I chose WSU because of the community and opportunities for me as a student and now the future tuition discount as well.”

Director of Undergraduate Admissions Bobby Gandu says he’s thrilled to see more students have access to all that Wichita State offers at a competitive in-state, value-driven rate.

“I’ve interacted with numerous families from this area, and they’ve been asking for us to offer this opportunity,” he says.

Shocker City Partnership was rolled out in 2015 for Oklahoma City and Tulsa, Oklahoma, residents and extended to the Dallas metro area in 2016.

Students from Texas and Oklahoma who live in counties outside the Dallas-Fort Worth, Oklahoma City and Tulsa metropolitan areas are still eligible for the Shocker Select program, which gives eligible students a 33 percent discount off nonresident tuition.

With these two programs, Wichita State is among the most affordable large research university universities in the area.
