Wiyos, dancers reunite for 'Wiyos of Oz' tour

After a successful run this spring at Wichita State University, "The Wiyos of Oz" is back by popular demand for a three-city tour. Performances are planned for Saturday, May 22, in Hays; Tuesday, May 25, in Pittsburg; and Thursday, May 27, in Wichita.

The mega-talented Wiyos will return to the state of Kansas to provide live music in this original and inventive theatrical production, said Nick Johnson, director of dance at Wichita State.

As a traveling production, Johnson said, the show is touring three cities in one week. Kansans are encouraged to attend this one-of-a-kind performance.

"The Wiyos of Oz," an original production created by the WSU dance program in collaboration with the WSU Media Resources Center, is a hybrid film/live stage production that combines dance theater, choreography and film with the music of the Wiyos.

The story is loosely based on the story of Dorothy and Oz, but describes Dorothy's transition from young girl to woman, a philosophical journey about self-discovery, dream and the subconscious. The characters in the performance appear both on stage and on film, transitioning back and forth from one to the other in "a magical display of creative choreography," said Johnson.

Dancers share the stage with the Wiyos as they present original songs from their album "Broken Land Bell" and a selection of their new works.

It's a fun show for all ages, said Johnson, and a wonderful showcase for the dancers, the MRC and, of course, the Wiyos.
