Wonders of the winter skies on display at observatory

During the winter months of January, February and March on moonless evenings, the Lake Afton Public Observatory will present “Wonders of the Winter Sky.”

The show will be presented Jan. 7-8, 21-22 and 28-29; Feb. 4-5 and 25-26; and March 4-5 and 25-26.

Many of the objects in the winter sky actually look better when viewed through a good pair of binoculars instead of a telescope. During this program, visitors will get to see for themselves and compare these two views. Bring a pair of binoculars or use the observatory’s as staff guides you through the winter sky.

Also planned for the observatory is “Luna and the Starry Skies,” on the evenings of Jan. 14-15; Feb. 11-12 and 18-19; and March 11-12 and 18-19. Visitors will be treated to a view of a double or binary star system, a double open cluster of stars and Jupiter (in January). They will also get to clearly see the moon’s craters, mountains and smooth plains.
