Dean's Scholars named at Wichita State

After the most competitive process in program history, the fifth class of Dean’s Scholars at Wichita State University has been named. Sixty students from across the Wichita metropolitan area will be honored at a dinner at 5:30 p.m. today (Monday, Feb. 7) in WSU’s Marcus Welcome Center.

The media are welcome to attend the program, which will start after 6 p.m.

Each year three local high schools are selected from the Wichita area, and about 10 scholarships are awarded at each school. This year’s Dean’s Scholars Schools were Andover Central High School, Wichita High School Northwest, and Wichita High School South.

There are also at-large scholarships available to any high school senior from the Wichita metropolitan area. All applicants were required to have a 3.25 grade point average and at least a 26 on the ACT.

Those selected will receive full tuition, books and room and board for the 2011-2012 academic year. Additional scholarship opportunities will be available for subsequent semesters.

The best and brightest

The Dean’s Scholars Program was created in 2007 by Christine Schneikart-Luebbe, associate vice president for student engagement and dean of enrollment management.

The program is aimed at attracting some of Wichita’s best and brightest to Wichita State through a variety of social and academic programs.

Schneikart-Luebbe is amazed at the growth of the program.

“These are all very talented students, and I would love nothing more than for all of them to decide that Wichita State is where they want to pursue their education,” she said.

During the past few months these students were given a firsthand look into all that Wichita State has to offer. The average ACT of the students selected was a 29, and the average grade point average was a 3.88.

“These students are some of the area’s most impressive high school students, and I look forward to all that they will bring as Shockers,” said Schneikart-Luebbe.
