Wichita State University Provost Gary L. Miller was named chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Wilmington today (Tuesday, May 3).

In his new role, beginning by July 1, he will be responsible for leading a campus with 13,000 students and 900 faculty members. It is located adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Fear estuary, and is a leading university for teaching, research and service in marine science.

In commenting on Miller’s selection by the Board of Governors of the 17-campus University of North Carolina system, WSU President Don Beggs said:

“I’m pleased for Gary. He’s prepared to lead a university. In his five years at Wichita State, he’s made significant contributions to documenting learning and creating academic and research programs that further our role as an urban serving university. I’ll miss him as a colleague and wish him and wife Georgia all the best.”

Beggs said while at WSU, Miller has been an important leader of initiatives to increase student enrollment, retention and graduation; attract returning adult students; utilize technology; involve the faculty in discussion about the future of universities; and increase sponsored research funding.

Beggs said he would announce a decision about filling Miller’s position before June 1.

"It has been a great honor to have worked with such fine faculty, staff and administrative leaders during the past five years,” Miller said. “Wichita State University is a special place with a bright future and has an extremely important role to play in the economy of Kansas.”

He said: “Wichita State graduates are among the most important leaders of the state and nation – a testament to the deep commitment of the faculty to academic programs of the highest quality.

"Georgia and I are most appreciative of the friendship and mentorship of Don and Shirley Beggs, and we always remember that being a Shocker is a very, very special thing," said Miller.
