Anniversary events set for June at public observatory

This June is the Lake Afton Public Observatory’s 30th anniversary. To celebrate, LAPO will be observing Saturn and the moon and taking everyone on a constellation tour, from 9-11 p.m. Friday and Saturday, June 10-11.

Visitors who bring proof they were born in 1981 – or those who can tell LAPO officials about an important astronomical event that took place in 1981 – will get in free.

For helpful hints, go to webs.wichita.edu/lapo/lapo30.htm.

There will also be door prizes, activities for children and drawings for prizes. The first 30 people to enter the building each evening will receive a stargazing observation kit to help watch the summer night sky on their own.

Children ages 6-12 can collect rewards for completing an astronomy scavenger hunt.

Members of the Kansas Astronomical Observers will have some of their telescopes set up on the observing pad behind the observatory building looking at other night sky objects beyond Saturn and the moon.
