Expanded Welsbacher Theatre to be celebrated

Dedication of the newly renovated Welsbacher Black Box Theatre, named for legendary actor/director Dick Welsbacher, will be celebrated from 5:30-7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at its home in Wichita State University’s Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 5015 E. 29th St. N.

The College of Fine Arts and the School of Performing Arts at Wichita State are hosts for the event. Welsbacher, retired WSU emeritus professor and director of theater, will be on hand.

The new space will offer expanded opportunities for student-directed and -designed productions. That has been the idea behind “black box” theater at Wichita State since its beginnings in Wilner Auditorium.

Because seating is limited, admittance will be by reservation only. For reservations, call (316) 978-6634 before Friday, Sept. 2. After the dedication, an open house from 7-8 p.m. will offer opportunities to view the space, visit with Welsbacher and friends, and enjoy light refreshments.
