National debate tourney takes center stage at WSU

Media are invited to attend the National Championship Tournament of the Cross Examination Debate Association, being held Friday, March 21, through Monday, March 24, at Wichita State University.

WSU is hosting the national competition, which is expected to draw more than 175 debate teams from approximately 70 schools throughout the country. It is the largest collegiate policy debate tournament in the United States.

The opening awards ceremony is at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at the Wichita Marriott. Competition is from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday, March 21-Saturday, March 22, on the WSU campus. The Rhatigan Student Center is the campus headquarters for the event.

Elimination rounds are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at WSU and 8 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the Wichita Marriott.

Three WSU teams will compete in the tournament, including two seniors: Matt Coleman and Zach Brown.

The competition host is Jeff Jarman, assistant professor in WSU’s Elliott School of Communication and director of speech and debate. Joe Patrice with the U.S. Military Academy is director of the tournament.
