Off Broadway drama on gay teens, religion at Wichita State

The Off Broadway play “The Bus,” which recently played to sold-out houses in New York City, will be performed at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, in the CAC Theater at Wichita State University.

Tickets are $10, general admission, for the general public, and $5 for the WSU community. Tickets will be sold at the door, beginning one hour prior to the show.

The original Off Broadway cast will travel from New York City to perform the play in Wichita. To learn more about the play, go to http://thebustheplay.com.

“The Bus,” which takes a provocative look at the confluence of gay teens, religion and homophobia in a small American town, was called “theater magic!” by the New York film critic Weston Clay, “Intimate and touching!” by Advocate, and “Packs a wallop!” by New York theater magazine, Curtain Up. “The Bus” originally premiered in Burlington, Vt., where the Burlington Free Press called it, “An extraordinary play!”

About 'The Bus'

Playwright James Lantz, who will travel along with the production to Wichita, said, “We’re honored that the first place “The Bus” will play after New York City is Wichita. This is an extraordinary opportunity for us and we’re grateful to WSU for extending the invitation. All of us — the cast, crew and backers of the production — are super excited to share our play with the good people of Wichita.”

A talk back with the playwright and cast will follow the show.

“The Bus” is about gay teens Jordan and Ian who regularly rendezvous in a parked bus that belongs to the most powerful church in their small town, Golden Rule. When their secret meeting place is in danger of being discovered, the boys find themselves caught in a conflict between Golden Rule and a gas station owned by Ian’s father — and the clash proves explosive.

The Wichita performance is sponsored by WSU’s Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures, and the Kansas Equality Coalition, Wichita Chapter.
