WSU awards $8,000 scholarship to Kansas high school senior

Maize South High School senior Denning Gerig has won Wichita State University’s Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Scholarship. Maize High School senior Whitney Roelfs has been selected as the runner-up.

The scholarships are awarded annually at WSU.Gerig will receive $8,000 over four years, $2,000 per year, to attend Wichita State.

Roelfs will receive $4,000 over four years, $1,000 per year, to attend Wichita State.

Gerig and Roelfs were selected from among 96 applicants competing for the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Scholarship.

To be eligible to apply, students had to have a 24 or higher ACT score and a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA, apply for WSU general scholarships and be a student at an Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League school.

Applicants had to respond to the question, “In your opinion, how has technology (text messaging, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) affected the verbal and written communication skills of your generation?”

Ark Valley Chisholm Trail Scholarships have been awarded annually since 2005 to freshmen entering WSU.
