Announcer: Sending a text message leads people to lie more often than using other forms of communication, according to new research by David Xu, assistant professor in the W. Frank Barton School of Business at Wichita State University, and two co-authors with the Sauder School of Business at the University of British Columbia. Xu says the researchers analyzed which forms of communication led to more deception.

Xu: “In this study, we found that people lied significantly less in a video channel than face-to-face. In part, this is because a video recording can be replayed.”

Announcer: Xu says that people also are much angrier when they are lied to by texting, in part because the text message offers little chance of misinterpretation. This is Joe Kleinsasser at Wichita State University.

Sound bite #1
Xu says people are more honest in a video than when texting. The sound bite is 22 seconds and the outcue is “deceptive message.”

Xu: “The second finding is that people are more honest with the video than with text. One explanation is that with the text channel, people seem more anonymous to the other party, and, second, the texts give the users the opportunity to craft a deceptive message.”

Sound bite #2
Xu says people are angrier when they’re lied to by texting. The sound bite is 12 seconds and the outcue is “of misinterpretation.”

Xu: “We also found that people are far more angry when they’re lied to by text. One of the reasons is that the text offers little chance of misinterpretation.”

Sound bite #3
Xu says text messaging leads people to be more deceitful than other forms of communication. The sound bite is nine seconds and the outcue is “more anonymous.”

Xu: “Text messaging leads people to be more deceitful when compared to other modes of communication because of the theory of feeling more anonymous.”

Sound bite #4
Xu says the research offers some insights for consumers making a major online purchase. The sound bite is 12 seconds and the outcue is “with the seller.”

Xu: “Because people lie more by texting, so when consumers make a major online purchase, it is better to set up a video call with the seller.”

Sound bite #5
Xu says the study also offers some things for businesses to consider. The sound bite is six seconds and the outcue is “on the customers.”

Xu: “Another implication is that video conferencing can help businesses make better impressions on the customers.”
