Shocker bowling sweeps Jayhawk Collegiate Classic tournament

The Wichita State men’s and women’s bowling teams swept the competition Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 3 and 4, at the second annual Jayhawk Collegiate Classic tournament in Lawrence, Kan. It was the Shockers’ third tournament of the season.

The men’s varsity team placed first in its field with a 260-pin win over second place University of Kansas. The women’s team also took first, with a 1,300-pin win over their competition.

The men’s junior varsity team claimed the top spot in their field by more than 1,900 pins.

“This was a good early season event where we got a number of things done on both sides – the men and women,” said assistant coach Mark Lewis. “We also were able to get some of our new players some experience that will help us down the road.”

Six Shocker bowlers earned all-tournament team honors, based on game averages. Junior Devin Bidwell, senior Marcus Berndt and junior Blake Demore finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively.

On the women’s side, senior Jazreel Tan, junior Allie Ijams and freshman Dasha Kovalova took first, second and third overall.

The Jayhawk Collegiate Classic is a two-day tournament that consists of six team games and 20 Baker games. This year, 12 teams competed in the men’s field, while six bowled in the women’s.
