Wichita State speech-language pathology doctoral student Kai-Mei Chen was selected over the summer as a recipient of the 2012 American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Minority Student Leadership Program (MSLP) Award. About 30 students nationally are chosen for the award.

As part of the award, Chen received complimentary registration and travel funds for the 2012 ASHA Convention Nov. 15-17 in Atlanta, where she participated in leadership activities.

Minority undergraduate seniors, master’s and doctoral students studying communication sciences and disorders are eligible for the award. Students are evaluated based on an application, resume, 500-word essay, letter of recommendation, statement of good standing and statement of commitment.

The MSLP is a leadership development program designed to recruit and retain minority speech-language pathology and audiology professionals, and provide education to build leadership skills and opportunities for participants to interact with top communication sciences and disorders professionals.
