Elaine Steinke, a professor in the School of Nursing at Wichita State University, has been inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Induction into the academy is a distinct honor that is conferred based on significant contributions to the profession of nursing and health care in general.

“Selection for membership in the academy is one of the most prestigious honors in the field of nursing,” said academy president Joanne Disch.

Steinke’s major contributions are in the field of sexual counseling, meeting the educational needs of patients with cardiovascular problems and their partners. She is internationally renowned for bringing the science of sexuality and sexual counseling of cardiac patients to the forefront of cardiac practice.

“My goal in nursing and education is to make a difference in the lives of others each and every day – individuals, patients, students, researchers and other colleagues,” she said.

The academy is composed of more than 1,800 nurse leaders in education, management, practice, policy and research. Applicants are reviewed by a panel that comprises elected and appointed fellows, and selection is based, in part, on the extent to which nominees’ nursing careers influence health policies and the health and well-being of all. Relatively few nurses are afforded the honor.

Steinke was nominated by Diana Guthrie, a nationally known adjunct faculty member in the WSU School of Nursing, and Terry Lennie, professor, College of Nursing, University of Kentucky, Lexington.

The induction ceremony for new fellows was held in October on Capitol Hill, Washington, D.C.

“I am deeply honored and humbled to receive this award,” Steinke said.
