In an effort to sharpen its focus on experience-based learning, Wichita State University’s Elliott School of Communication is hosting an Internship Fair, open to current communication students as well as recent graduates looking for the opportunity to connect with employers.
Because of inclement weather, the event -- which had been schedule for Feb. 5 -- is now set for 1-3 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17, in Room 180 of the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, 29th and Oliver.
Representatives from more than 25 communication employers in the area are expected to attend the fair. For students, the fair offers the chance to network with communication professionals, gain valuable experience interviewing and secure an internship or part-time job while still in school. Students can sign up for a time-slot to interview with specific employers in the Elliott Hall office (Room 102).

- The Wichita Eagle and KWCH Channel 12
- KMUW, Entercom Radio and Journal Broadcast Group
- Pen Publishing
- Sullivan Higdon & Sink
- United Way of the Plains
- Value Place
- Foulston Siefkin Law Firm
The Elliott School has an international reputation for turning out top-quality communication professionals, largely because of its focus on experience-based learning and a faculty that teaches real-world skills.
“We strongly encourage all communication students to get practical work experience through at least one internship,” said Eric Wilson, an Elliott School instructor and advisor. “We know that these opportunities are invaluable in helping learn and fine-tune professional skills, and to gaining experience which is needed as they search for employment opportunities.”
That approach is appealing to employers in the Wichita area and beyond, who rely on fresh recruits trained in cutting-edge skills and ready to work.
“I think any employer wants potential employees to have practical, hands-on experience in the field they are interested in,” said Tom Shine, deputy editor at the Wichita Eagle. “We find that students who have completed internships or done part-time work contribute more quickly and are more productive.”
In addition to traditional summer internships, The Eagle often invites communication students to spend time shadowing or working part-time during the school year or while on winter break.
“We have had several students work with us through WSU's Cooperative Education program,” said Shine. “One of our recent hires started with us as a co-op student.”
