Civil Rights musical 'Violet' coming to Wilner Auditorium

Wichita State University’s School of Performing Arts presents the musical “Violet,” based on the short story “The Ugliest Pilgrim,” by Doris Betts. The musical shows at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 6-Saturday, March 8, and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in Wilner Auditorium. General admission is $16, $14 for military and seniors, $6 for non-WSU students and free for WSU students with ID.

“Violet,” written by Brian Crawley with music by Jeanine Tesori, is set in the Deep South during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. The story follows the growth and enlightenment of a bitter woman accidentally scarred as a young girl. Violet was one of the most acclaimed off-Broadway shows of the 1990s, and in March will premiere on Broadway, with two-time Tony Award Winner Sutton Foster in the lead.

The WSU production will be directed by alumnus Stephen Kopel, with music direction by recent Music Theater graduate Emily Pirtle and choreographed by Assistant Professor Amy Baker Schwiethale.
