The Orfeo Trio faculty ensemble will appear as soloists with the Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, in Wiedemann Hall.

General admission for the program, which will feature music by Beethoven and Shostakovich, is $7. Discount tickets for military, senior citizens, faculty and staff are available for $6, and children and non-WSU students for $3. Wichita State students always receive one free ticket with their Shocker ID.

The Orfeo Trio – which includes pianist and Professor of Music Julie Bees, violinist and Adjunct Professor Evgeny Zvonnikov and cellist and Assistant Professor of Music Leonid Shukaev – will perform Beethoven’s Triple Concerto in C Major, a virtuosic showpiece believed to be written for 15-year-old Archduke Rudolph, a pupil of Beethoven’s who would become his greatest patron. The orchestra will also perform Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, Dimitri Shostakovich.

The Orfeo Trio was formed in 2012 as the official Piano Trio of the Wichita State College of Fine Arts, School of Music. All three members of the group are active performers with considerable chamber music experience.

Bees has performed chamber music throughout her career, including with the Vermeer Quartet and the St. Petersburg String Quartet, as well as in lieder recitals and with various instrumental ensembles at summer festivals. Zvonnikov played second violin in the St. Petersburg String Quartet from 2010-2014, and is associate concertmaster of the Wichita Symphony Orchestra. Shukaev is a founding member of the St. Petersburg String Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at Wichita State.

The WSU Symphony Orchestra’s performance will be conducted by Mark Laycock, professor of music and holder of the Ann Walenta Faculty of Distinction Endowed Professorship.
