WSU Health Care Administration program named No. 5 most affordable in the nation

Editor's note: The Top Masters in Healthcare website recently revised its list in the light of some inaccurate information. As a result of that revision, Wichita State moved from No. 10 to No. 5 in their rankings. This story has been updated to reflect that change.

Wichita State University has been named to another "top" list, this time the W. Frank Barton School of Business’ Health Care Administration (HCA) program, a concentration area for MBA students.

The Top Masters in Healthcare website named Wichita State’s HCA program No. 5 on its “Top 20 Affordable Master’s Degrees in Healthcare Administration 2015” list.

“Kansas state residents might want to consider Wichita State University for their health care education needs,” the report’s author, Iris Stone, said.

“Most people in the field are interested in hearing about the best master’s degrees in health care administration available, but aspiring students typically also have an interest in saving money. This demand is what inspired our ranking, where we sought out the most affordable programs in the nation.”

The report cited the affordable advantages available to HCA students because of the program’s relationship with the business college, including a wide range of health and business-related courses as well as opportunities like the “Berlin Experience,” which sends students to Germany to work on real consulting projects for hands-on management experience.

According to the 2015 Occupation Outlook Handbook, the field of health care administration is thriving far above average – about 23 percent in job growth through 2022.

“We are seeing a growing group of medical professionals that want to move into administrative and leadership roles within their organizations,” said Liz McLain, director of graduate studies in business at the Barton School. “Our MBA with the Health Ccare Administration focus prepares our students for those types of roles. It combines the core MBA courses with courses from Public Health Sciences so the student has a solid background as they move forward in their career.”

The “Top 20 Affordable Master’s Degrees in Healthcare Administration” list was compiled of all accredited schools offering health care degrees, eliminating those without graduate programs or those with primarily online course offerings.

The health care industry earns more revenue in the United States than any other field, according to the website, and is also the second largest national employer. Health care organizations collectively provide more than 11 million job opportunities around the country.
