Organist and pianist Tate C. Addis, a Wichita State alumnus currently studying at the Yale Divinity School’s Institute of Sacred Music, will perform an organ concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, in Wiedemann Hall. The concert is part of the School of Music’s 2014-15 Rie Bloomfield Organ Series.

Addis, who is also the 2013-15 Wilson Family Sacred Music Intern at New York City’s historic Brick Presbyterian Church, has been acclaimed for performances of “exquisite beauty” and “crystalline clarity.”

A native of Derby, Kan., Tate began studying music at the age of three under the instruction of his grandmother, who was organist at the local Presbyterian Church. Since then, he has performed throughout the United States and Europe as a soloist and chamber musician in a repertoire spanning more than four centuries.

Background

Recent concert appearances include concerto performances with the Jefferson City Symphony Orchestra, Omaha Symphony Orchestra, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory Orchestra, the UMKC Conservatory Wind Symphony and Wichita State University Symphony Orchestra, with conductors such as Robert Bode, Steven D. Davis, WSU professor Mark Laycock and Ernest Richardson.

As a harpsichordist, he has given acclaimed performances of Elliott Carter’s Sonata for flute, oboe, cello and harpsichord.

He has received awards in the Robert M. Spire Piano Competition, Crescendo International Music Awards, Kansas-MTNA Steinway and Sons Young Artist Competition, and the Jefferson City Symphony Piano Competition.

As a collaborative musician, he has performed with many artists including tenor Vinson Cole, violinists Daniel Hope and Benny Kim, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Addis received a Bachelor of Music (Piano) degree from Wichita State, where he studied with Andrew Trechak. During his undergraduate studies, Tate was named WSU Senior Honor Man, the highest award presented to an enrolled student. He earned a Master of Music (Piano) and Artist’s Certificate (Piano) from the University of Missouri- Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance under Robert Weirich. His principal organ teachers have been Elisa Williams Bickers, Lynne Davis and Robert Town.
