WSU brings Sondheim's 'Into the Woods' to Wilner Auditorium

Wichita State University's School of Performing Arts Musical Theatre Program will perform Stephen Sondheim's "Into the Woods" at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, April 30-May 2, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in Wilner Auditorium.

The musical production of “Into the Woods” is an epic fairytale about wishes, family and the choices we make. It is based on many familiar characters from Grimm’s Fairy Tales, including Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk and Little Red Riding Hood.

The first act introduces the story’s characters as they begin their quests and the second act explores the consequences of getting what you want. Recently turned into a movie with Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep, James Corden and Johnny Depp, “Into the Woods” is a modern classic that critics have called both enchanting and touching.

The show is directed by Associate Professor Linda Starkey, director of the school of performing arts, with choreography by Associate Professor Amy Baker Schwiethale and music direction by alumnus Philip Taylor.

The cast includes musical theater students Scott Salem as “The Narrator,” Jennie Hughes as “The Baker’s Wife,” Michael Allen as “The Baker,” Emily Monrad as “The Witch,” Emily Vargo as “Little Red Riding Hood,” Hannah Fernandes as “Cinderella,” Josh Brown as “Cinderella’s Prince,” Jacob Groth as “Rapunzel’s Prince,” Anthony Gasbarre as “The Wolf,” Gavin Myers as “Jack,” Alyson Golladay as “Jack’s Mother,” Joella Wolnik as “Rapunzel,” and Lance McDougall as “Prince Charming.”

The production team includes Associate Professors David Neville (scenic and lighting), Cate Wieck (costumes) and Ed Baker (technical direction) as faculty designers, along with performing arts students Melanie Calvery (stage manager), Veniese Razo (assistant stage manager), Alex Castaneda (assistant director), Ryan Morrow (sound design), Emmy Guiltner (props master) and Jennie Hughes (associate choreographer).
