Lifelong Learning Program rolled out for senior citizens

Wichita State University is rolling out its Lifelong Learning Program for senior citizens this fall.

With five new classes being held at retirement communities and senior centers around Wichita, residents and members of the community 60 years old or older can audit these classes without paying tuition (some workshop fees may apply).

Although geared toward the senior citizen population, anyone younger than 60 can enroll in the classes if they pay regular tuition and fees.

“Due to the success of the pilot program at Larksfield Place in the spring and the overwhelming number of interested applicants for fall, we are really excited to not only make this program official, but also to add so many more classes at different locations,” said Kimberly Moore, director of WSU’s Office for Workforce, Professional and Community Education. “We value our seniors and are excited to provide them with more options around the city.”

Classes for fall 2015 include:

  • Workshop in Kansas History: Kansas State of Mind: Exploring Kansas’ Impact on the Nation through Her Causes, Politics, Culture and Faith - Downtown Senior Center
  • Workshop in Music: Music in Film - Kansas Masonic Home
  • Workshop in History: Great Britain in 1912: Downton Abbey in Peril; Course in Religion: Archaeology and the Bible - Larksfield Place
  • Workshop in Kansas History: Adapting to Kansas Change: The Kansas Story - Reflection Ridge Retirement Community

Per the Kansas Board of Regents’ Policy, students 60 years of age or older can enroll as auditors in academic credit courses, when space is available, without paying tuition. The only cost is any workshop fees and lab/special course fees. In addition, senior citizens who have not previously been enrolled at WSU must pay a one-time application fee of $30. Senior citizens must present a Medicare card or valid driver’s license to validate age.
