Middle school girls will isolate DNA, learn to code, analyze crime scenes and much more at third annual career conference

Wichita State University will host up to 200 middle school girls for the Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) conference Saturday, Nov. 7.

This is the third annual EYH, an event promoting career exploration in STEM fields of science, technology, engineering and math for young women. The EYH Network is a national program that gives girls a chance to engage in hands-on activities and meet role models in science disciplines. The purpose of the event is to inspire girls from all backgrounds to recognize their potential and pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). EYH provides support for and promotes interaction between people employed by industry and education.

Registration is limited to 200 participants to maximize interaction at workshops, and will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis through Friday, Oct. 31. The registration fee of $12 includes lunch, a name badge, T-shirt and bag for the student attending. Prizes will be awarded at the event, including a scholarship for the WSU Engineering Summer Camp.

Students will be able to register for three workshops. Workshops this year include “Catapult Challenge,” “Fire and Ice,” “Create with Code,” “It’s Sedimentary, My Dear,” “Party in my Tummy,” “Your DNA in a Bottle,” “Engineer a Coaster,” “Feathered Frenzy,” “Exploring the Thunderstorm,” “Going, Going, Gone: The Art of the Auction,” “Bug Buddies and Bug Buffets,” Biomechanics of Joints” and “Design your Own Video Game”

Parents will also have the opportunity to attend a session on topics such as financing college, college expectations related to preparation during middle and high school, and the process of applying to colleges (including ACT taking, test prep, college visits, application essays, scholarships, etc.).
