Mary Herrin, vice president of Administration and Finance at Wichita State University, has informed President John Bardo of her plan to retire at the end of 2016.

The university will conduct a national search for Herrin's successor, chaired by Provost and Senior Vice President Tony Vizzini.

"Mary Herrin is a very kind person and, in many ways, represents the modern history of WSU," Bardo said. "Her knowledge, leadership and loyalty are much admired across the university and throughout the world of higher education finance."

"When I was a young department chair here more than 30 years ago striving to understand the university and my own responsibilities, Mary was always helpful and supportive. I've found her the same way since my return to campus four years ago.

"Giving us 11 months to find her successor," Bardo said, "is typical of her generosity of spirit and willingness to do whatever it takes to help Wichita State."

Herrin came to WSU first as an undergraduate. She received her bachelor's and master's degrees from the college of business and began a career in higher education administration that has spanned more than 40 years.

In 2008 she succeeded Roger Lowe as the university's vice president and chief financial officer.

"WSU has been a wonderful place to work," Herrin said. "I have been blessed to work with a great Administration and Finance team as well as many other colleagues across campus. I was also extremely fortunate to have Roger Lowe as a mentor. WSU has a great future ahead."

At Bardo's request, Herrin will continue on a part-time basis throughout 2017, serving as his assistant and working with Herrin's successor.

Herrin has been responsible for university budget, financial operations and business technology, financial reporting, purchasing, human resources, facilities planning, physical plant, auxiliary services and university police.

She has served as a board member and in financial roles with WSU's Intercollegiate Athletic Association, Board of Trustees and Student Union Corp. She has also been active in regional and national higher education groups, including serving as chair of the National Association of College and University Business Officers.
