WSU camp highlights STEM skills for area girls

Wichita-area girls are getting hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering and math during Wichita State University’s "Girls Rock Science Camp."

The first camp was held June 1-2 and included learning how a robot works, coding a video game, using a 3D printer and exploring what makes an airplane fly.

Through those activities, participants are getting a taste of the fun in specific STEM programs as they compete in challenges and work together to solve problems. The camp also includes meeting local women working in and leading STEM industries.

Additional camps for high school girls and girls going into grades 3-5 will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 15-16. To register, go to http://watc.edu/Events/.

Each camp is at Wichita Area Technical College’s National Center for Aviation Training Campus at 4004 N. Webb Road, Building 300.

The Girls Rock Science Camps are hosted by Wichita State’s College of Education, WATC’s National Center for Aviation Training and the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland. Sponsors include: Spirit AeroSystems, Koch Industries, Transitions Group, the Nygaard Family Foundation and Kim Patterson.
