Wichita State to perform Mozart's final opera, 'La Clemenza di Tito'

Wichita State University School of Music and Performing Arts will present the opera, “La Clemenza di Tito,” (The Clemency of Tito) by W.A. Mozart and C. Mazzola.

The opera will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, March 16-18 and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 19, in Miller Concert Hall. It is rated PG and will run for about two hours and 30 minutes.

“Le Clemenza di Tito was Mozart’s last opera, composed as he was working on “The Magic Flute” and “The Requiem.” The plot is inspired by the life of the Roman Emperor Titus Augustus. In the opera, Titus is endangered by an assassination plot conceived by a jealous woman who hoped to marry him and become empress.

Through his artistry and humanity, Mozart uses the opera to remind us of our better natures.

The cast is made up of WSU graduate and undergraduate music and theater students, with stage direction by Marie King, director of Opera Theatre. Mark Laycock, director of Orchestra, will conduct.
