WSU Theater presents 'A Hedda Gabler' performance, workshop

Wichita State University Theater will present “A Hedda Gabler” at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 16-18, and 2 p.m. Nov. 19, in Wilner Auditorium.

Aristocrat Hedda Gabler is newly married to academic George Tesman and finds herself trapped in a life lacking in personal agency. Boredom and suffocating social conformity lead her to manipulate the lives of others in an effort to become master of her fate. But her desperate path can only end in destruction.

Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Box Office in the lobby of the Duerksen Fine Arts Center or online at wichita.edu/fineartsboxoffice. General admission is $20, with $18 discount tickets available for seniors, faculty/staff and military or $10 tickets for children and students. WSU students are eligible for one free ticket (visit http://www.wichita.edu/j/?4363 for details). “A Hedda Gabler” is directed by Danette Baker, visiting assistant professor of theater, with assistance from theater major Jeremy Buoy, assistant director.

Playwright Nigel O’Hearn’s contemporary translation / adaption of Henrick Ibsen’s 19th century masterpiece “Hedda Gabler” was a finalist at the 2012 International Ibsen Festival, National Theatre of Norway.

A reception for O’Hearn will be held in the Wilner Commons immediately following Saturday night’s performance.
Join O’Hearn for a playwriting workshop that will address dialogue analysis and writing, with a focus on what elements of good dialogue move an audience toward understanding from 2-5:30 p.m. Nov. 18, in Welsbacher Theatre at the Hughes Metropolitan Complex, entrance F.

The workshop is free. Attendees should bring a pad of paper, writing utensil and a creative spirit.
