After first year in expanded location, Shocker Support Locker served 1,000 students

In its first year in its new location, the Shocker Support Locker (SSL) has already served approximately 1,000 students. The SSL aims to combat food insecurity on campus, as well as supply students and faculty with access to hygiene products and professional clothing.

The SSL moved to Grace Wilkie Hall 103 in August 2017. With the assistance of the LAS Advising Center locking and unlocking the locker each day, students have access to visit the SSL from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The increased privacy and the longer hours make it easier for students to utilize the locker.

It would be impossible to serve this number of students without the help of donors.

  • Starbucks donates food three times a week, and student volunteers pick up these items, organize them, weigh them and stock them in the pantry.
  • Save-a-Lot gave $425 in gift card donations that were used to purchase hundreds of pounds of food.
  • Chartwells, the university’s food service provider, has agreed to provide $10,000 in support each year over the next five years.

In addition to corporate sponsors, departments and entities around campus have also supported the SSL in the past year.

  • The College of Education donated hundreds of hygiene items,
  • LAS Advising Center supports the opening and closing every day of operation
  • Rhatigan Student Center and WSU Foundation have hosted drives,
  • Community Service Board and Student Involvement have held drives and volunteered

Career Development Center held a partnership event with Student Government Association (SGA), which provided 48 students with professional clothing.
